In June 2015, for the first time in the fine history of Motive Travel, we took a band of horseracing fanatics across the world to another nation that just can’t get enough of the equine sport – Great Britain. We had such a great time that we did it again in 2016 and 2017 and are now super excited to let you know that we’ll be going again in 2018!
Great Britain is a country with a whole host of famous events that are longtime household names – the Grand National and Cheltenham Festival to name but two.
The Motive Travel party, though, had their sights set on another historic gala of horses – the Royal Ascot. Not many sporting events can trace their history back over three centuries, but the Royal Ascot can do just that, cementing its place among racing royalty ever since since the inaugural race was held in 1711.
However, the event hasn’t just faded into obscurity as the years have passed – if anything, it’s popularity has boomed – some 300,000 punters entered the gates at the Royal Ascot 2015.
A Royal occasion
What attracts so many people to this tiny corner of Berkshire? First and foremost, it’s the racing. The prestige of the Gold Cup has few equals in equestrian sport, and with a great range of other races spread over the five days, those looking for pure, unadulterated racing action will be well catered for.
The Royal Ascot didn’t get its name simply for aesthetic reasons – Queen Elizabeth II has not missed the event in any one of her 63 years on the throne. Indeed, 11 preceding monarchs have arrived at the racecourse via the Royal Procession, and taking in this spectacle is something that every race-goer will want to witness.
Even the presence of royalty cannot add to the pure legendary status that the third day of the festival has in store – the fabled ‘Ladies Day’. This is the where the pomp and pageantry of the Royal Ascot really comes into its own, with a fine selection of weird and wonderful hats on display as far as the eye can see.
