Gearing up for the Cox Plate 2016

Horse racing is a sport close to the heart of many Australians. Never has this been truer than in recent years, when the land Down Under had a bona-fide equine superstar to call its own – the unparalleled Black Caviar. This legend horse retired in 2013 , undefeated in 25 races and, since then, race-goers have been on the lookout for the next big thing.

Only the very fastest and esteemed of horses get the chance to race across this hallowed piece of turf.

If you were watching last October’s Cox Plate, you may well have seen the horse which could feasibly pick up up Black Caviar’s mantle. Winx, a genuine Aussie mare that could give other horses nightmares should they see a rerun of her barnstorming performance at the Moonee Valley Racing Club, wrote herself into the history (and record) books that day. How?

The rocket horse winner

Well, take into consideration that the starting field for the 2015 Cox Plate was the strongest that it has ever been for many a year. Many expected a tight race but, from the off, Winx set about leaving these distinguished runners in her wake as she regally galloped her way to a track record that has stood for 17 years, one set by the imperious Might And Power all that time ago. Indeed, Winx set the biggest winning margin since Sunline romped him way back in 2000. This is a horse that is going places.

Horse power

So, with 2015’s Cox Plate over, what do race fans have to look forward to next? Well, aside from the Royal Ascot and the Kentucky Derby (held far away from Australian soil, but still well worth a look!), it’s the 2016 edition of the Cox Plate, of course! At Motive Travel, we’ve already started to put together a fantastic package for those that are looking to enjoy the thrills and spills of the Moonee Valley once again in 2016.

As third-richest horse race in Australia (only the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup offer more than the Plate’s AU$3.05 million in prize money), only the very fastest and esteemed of horses get the chance to race across this hallowed piece of turf. At Motive Travel, we want you to catch as much of the action as you can.

We’ll be looking to rope in the President of the Western Australian Race Horse Owner’s Association and one of the Directors of Perth Racing, Harvey Crossman, to join us. Take a look at our flyer from 2015 for a little taste of what’s to come in this year’s edition – you won’t want to miss it!
